Escape into Nature at “Villages Natures”

We’ve been looking so much at the new construction at the domestic Disney parks, why don’t we take a look at an exciting new project at one of the international parks? Disneyland Paris announces plans to begin work on Villages Natures, an eco-tourism site built just under four miles outside of Disneyland Paris. Villages Natures is a lot more than a giant park along the lines of Disney World’s Wilderness Preserve. Eco-tourism means destinations designed to let guests commune with nature, where the focus of the vacation is being in and learning more about the natural world. The crowning center … Continue reading

Fires only happen at schools once in a while; how much more often do we experience house fires? If your child should be learning how to prepare for an emergency anywhere, it should be in the home, first and foremost, with other locations as a secondary course. Alternate Escape Route for Fires

Three sisters aged 12-19 died this weekend in a house fire. They had huddled in a closet and called 911. Their mother jumped off a deck to escape the fire, and neighbors could not get in to rescue the girls. I was devastated by the news remembering how my parents suffered my my sisters died young from disease. I can’t imagine how having your children die without warning must feel. The pain must be multiplied exponentially. This got me thinking about our family’s fire escape plan. We have two different route’s planned out… one to go out of my son’s … Continue reading

Do You Have a Pet Emergency Evacuation Plan?

The spooky incident with my neighbor’s fire yesterday got me to thinking about emergency evacuation plans. Namely, how I don’t have one. Which was something I’d never really considered before. Have you? Sure, I had thought about how to help Murph and the cats if I wasn’t there by posting an I.C.E sticker. But I’d never really considered what I’d do if I was there during the emergency. For some, like my neighbor Cindy, the question isn’t a hypothetical one. She’s got real-life experience in two types of scenarios. One where the danger was imminent and another where it’s urgent … Continue reading

Cats and Fire Don’t Mix

Between the car accident and my mom’s stroke, I’m ready for things to get back to some level of normalcy. It won’t be today. I had just gotten into the shower when I heard the doorbell ring. Since I was naked and wet, as well as running behind schedule, I figured whoever was ringing would come back. Or call and say they’d tried to stop by. But a few minutes later I heard sirens. A few seconds after that I knew they had turned into our neighborhood, and it didn’t take me even a nanosecond more to realize they’d turned … Continue reading

Well, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out why travel deals abound to this destination this time of year. As I continue my series on affordable winter escapes I’m spotlighting Reykjavik. The Icelandic capital city excels at embracing cold weather by offering a host of outdoor festivals and fun activities during a time when most of us are looking for the nearest fireplace and cup of hot chocolate. In Reykjavik family friendly events heat up in the winter months, most notably with Þrettándinn (or Twelfth Night) on January 6, which features Elfin-inspired dances, bonfires, and winter-inspired games for children. … Continue reading

School Learning- October is Fire Prevention Month

Your child may come home and ask you about some of the following ideas and topics. Make an escape plan. Make … Continue reading

An Amazing Fire Escape

Thank goodness cats have nine lives! A cat (who should be named Lucky) escaped a fire in West Orange, New Jersey this weekend with several lives intact. A two-story apartment house caught fire this weekend. No humans were injured in the blaze, but firefighters feared the worst for a tenant’s cat. When the fire was finally out, firefighters found the cat — it had survived the fire inside a couch. The cat had wedged itself down into the cushions and came through the fire without injury. Owner and cat have been reunited and are currently staying with a relative. For … Continue reading
