Preparing for Technology Issues: Online Billing

Computers are almost a necessity these days. Everyone has one. There are many of us who use this technology to our advantage, especially when it comes to bill paying. I'm guilty of it. Paying bills and checking balances online is only a click away. What's not to love about it? It's easier and faster than worrying about putting a stamp on an envelope and then having to mail it. Not to mention, it's less paper right? I know that in my house, less paper is a good thing! However, what would happen if your computer suddenly went cahoots on you? Sure, you could use a computer belonging to a friend or family member, but there are times when you just have to check that balance or pay a certain bill.

My suggestion is to compose a list of all bills and print out a copy and place it in a safe place. On this list, provide the name of the company, address, phone number, amount to be paid and on what date each payment is due. There are times that the date may vary, or even the amount, however having an estimated guess is better than not knowing at all.

A few months ago my cable modem went out on me. The tech guys couldn't come out for at least two or three days. I was so used to the convenience of checking my balances and paying bills online - I was totally lost. Guess technology will do that to you!

Shortly after my internet connection was up and running again, I printed out a copy of all bills and due dates. I also created a folder on my desktop. Even if I do not have access to the internet, I can easily click on that file and find out the information needed. Additionally, I have asked for paper statements, as well as online statements. I now have a paper trail in case of certain situations. In this day and age, we just never know when they will be needed and it's better to have these documents as a back up.
